Costa Rica: Your Ultimate Travel Guide to Guanacaste, Costa Rica

When we decided to visit Costa Rica, we knew we wanted a mix of adventure, relaxation, and good food—and Guanacaste delivered all that and more. Located on the country’s northwest coast, this sunny province is famous for its stunning beaches, lush landscapes, and endless opportunities for fun. Let me take you through everything we loved about Guanacaste, from where to stay to what to eat and do.

Why Guanacaste?

Picture golden beaches, tropical forests, and near-perfect weather year-round. That’s Guanacaste in a nutshell. It’s a little slice of paradise that feels like it was made for both adventure-seekers and those who just want to kick back and relax.

We stayed at an Airbnb that was nothing short of amazing. The house came with a private chef (seriously, every meal was a dream) and a local guide who took us to some of the most beautiful beaches and hidden gems in the area. If you’re planning a trip, I can’t recommend this kind of setup enough—it made everything so much easier and gave us a truly authentic experience.

Costa Rica’s Terrain

Costa Rica’s diverse terrain is part of what makes it so special. The key to enjoying it all? Packing smart. Leave the heels at home—or at least in your suitcase—because you’ll rarely, if ever, need them. Comfortable footwear like sneakers, hiking sandals, or flip-flops are your best bet. Swimwear and activewear will likely be your go-to outfits. Think lightweight, breathable fabrics that can handle both the heat and a bit of adventure. Don’t forget sunscreen, a hat, and a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated during your explorations.

Where to Stay in Guanacaste

Whether you’re looking for a luxury resort or a cozy rental home, Guanacaste has something for everyone. Here are some options:

Luxury Resorts in Costa Rica

  • Andaz Costa Rica Resort at Peninsula Papagayo: Perfect for couples and families, this eco-friendly resort offers incredible views and endless activities.
  • Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica: For ultimate luxury, this resort has private beaches and stunning villas.
  • W Costa Rica – Reserva Conchal: A modern, stylish choice with beachfront access.

Boutique Hotels in Guanacaste

  • Cala Luna Boutique Hotel & Villas: A peaceful retreat close to Playa Tamarindo with a focus on sustainability.
  • Jardín del Edén Boutique Hotel: An adults-only oasis with elegant rooms and private beach access.

Home Rentals in Costa Rica

  • Airbnb with a Private Chef: Our pick, and honestly, it’s a game-changer. Look for listings in Playa Flamingo or Playa Conchal for beachfront vibes.
  • Eco-Lodges: If you’re feeling adventurous, stay in a jungle lodge or treehouse for a unique experience.

What to Do in Guanacaste

There’s no shortage of activities in Guanacaste, so whether you want to explore or just chill, you’re covered.

Nature Adventures in Costa Rica

  • Rincón de la Vieja Volcano National Park: Hike through volcanic landscapes, soak in hot springs, and see bubbling mud pots.
  • Palo Verde National Park: Take a boat tour to spot crocodiles, monkeys, and tons of birds.

For Adventure Lovers

  • Surfing: Tamarindo and Playa Avellanas are great for all skill levels. Surf’s up!
  • Ziplining: Fly through the jungle canopy and soak in those incredible views.
  • Snorkeling & Diving: Head to Playa Conchal or the Catalina Islands for vibrant marine life.

Relaxation & Fun

  • Sunset Catamaran Cruise: There’s nothing like watching the sun dip below the Pacific while sipping on a tropical drink.
  • Beach Days: Guanacaste’s beaches are next-level beautiful (Sharing my favorites below).

Beaches You Can’t Miss

Guanacaste’s coastline is full of gems, but here are a few beaches that stole our hearts:

  • Playa Conchal: This beach is made of crushed shells instead of sand. It’s gorgeous and perfect for snorkeling.
  • Playa Flamingo: Soft white sand, calm waters, and plenty of spots to relax.
  • Playa Tamarindo: A lively beach town with shops, restaurants, and great surfing.
  • Playa Avellanas: Quiet and surrounded by nature—ideal for escaping the crowds.
  • Playa Hermosa: Family-friendly and laid-back with gentle waves.

Where to Eat in Guanacaste

One of the best parts of visiting Costa Rica is the food. Guanacaste’s culinary scene combines fresh, local ingredients with international flavors. Here are a few places to try:

  • Lola’s on the Beach: Fresh seafood and cocktails right by the water.
  • Café de Playa: A perfect spot for a romantic dinner with ocean views.
  • Dragonfly Bar & Grill: A fun, open-air restaurant with a great mix of local and global dishes.
  • Nalu Bowls: Colorful smoothie bowls made with tropical fruits—perfect for breakfast.
  • Makoko: A modern take on Costa Rican cuisine.
  • Corazon Surf Cafe: Specialty Coffees and Brunch

Best Time to Visit

Costa Rica has two main seasons:

  • Dry Season (December to April): The most popular time to visit, with sunny skies and warm temperatures.
  • Rainy Season (May to November): Also called the “green season.” Mornings are usually dry, with afternoon showers. It’s a quieter, more affordable time to visit, and the landscapes are lush and vibrant.

We visited in January during the dry season, which was perfect for beach days and exploring. If you want the best of both worlds, late November or late Janaury is a sweet spot.

Fun Facts About Costa Rica

  • Biodiversity: Costa Rica is home to about 5% of the world’s biodiversity.
  • No Army: The country abolished its military in 1949 to focus on education and healthcare.
  • “Pura Vida”: This iconic phrase means “pure life” and reflects the relaxed, happy Costa Rican way of life.
  • Eco-Friendly: Around 25% of Costa Rica is protected as national parks or reserves.

Guanacaste stole our hearts with its beauty, warmth, and adventure. Whether you’re planning your next big vacation or just daydreaming, I hope this guide inspires you to explore this magical part of Costa Rica. If you’ve been or have questions, let me know in the comments. Pura Vida.
