Trying on wedding gowns is an experience that’s hard to resist. There’s something uniquely special about wedding dresses—the luxurious fabrics, romantic lace, and intricate jewels—all these details can make you fall in love all over again. For a bride-to-be, the experience can truly be magical.
So, when VesaBrides, a boutique wedding dress shop in Nutley, New Jersey, invited me to model their gowns, I was instantly flooded with nostalgia. Memories of my own walk down the aisle in July 2017 came rushing back, though this time, there was no pressure to find “the one.”
During the shoot, boutique owner Veronica Castro shared stories from her 15 years of experience in the bridal industry, leaving me inspired. I couldn’t help but think of all the newly engaged brides out there. With so much to consider, finding the perfect dress can feel overwhelming. That’s why I asked Veronica to share her expert tips for every bride-to-be in search of that perfect gown. Here are her top 10 recommendations:
With so much information available online, it’s wise to start your research early. Most bridal shops require you to order your gown at least eight months before the wedding. Since each designer has a different timeline, it’s important to know where your designer is located—dresses can take five to six months to arrive.
Pinterest is a great tool for finding inspiration. Create a board to save styles you gravitate toward, but keep an open mind when shopping. Try on anything that catches your eye; you’ll soon discover what works best for your body.
Determine your budget before you start shopping. Research the dresses you like to avoid sticker shock, as prices can vary widely.
When booking bridal appointments, ask about price points and designers. Knowing what the store carries will help you make the most of your time.
While it’s nice to consider others’ opinions, the appointment is about you. Focus on your top choices first, and if there’s time, you can consider suggestions from others.
Limit your entourage to three people who know you well and understand your style. Too many opinions can be overwhelming.
Pack a hair tie or clip to help you see the back of the dress and secure veils in place.
Light-colored or nude undergarments are best, so they don’t show through the dresses. Also, bring heels that match the height you’ll wear on your wedding day.
Alterations are an art form. A skilled seamstress can tailor a dress to enhance your figure, giving you flattering curves you didn’t know you had. Start the process no later than two months before the wedding.
You’ll find the perfect gown. All dresses are beautiful, and the one that’s meant for you will make you feel stunning.
